Why the Nikon P7000 signals the end of life as we know it

Nikon has recently announced the long awaited replacement for the P6000.  Cleverly called the P7000, I’ll tell you why this camera will be an epic failure.  I’ll also tell you what this means for humanity on a greater scale.

I’ve always been a proponent of small high quality cameras.  Having a fantastic image maker that fits in you pocket is a lot like having a .22 caliber derringer.  Nobody knows you’ve got it till it’s to late.  That being said the only camera of this type that I’ve ever owned and been happy with was the Sigma DP1.  With it’s large sensor and prime lens it never let me down in the imaging department.  This camera and some others like it by Ricoh have a cult following but don’t appeal to the larger market.  Why?  Lets find out.

Technological advancement is a double edge sword.  On the up side it can make life easier and on the down it can make life easier.  Right about now your probably saying, “WTF is this guy talking about?”  Well here I go.  Before cars were widespread people did a lot more walking.  Sure cars made it easier to get around but it also made us fat and dependent on foreign oil.  Before text messaging we had to pick up a phone to talk to someone.  Sure texting makes it easier to communicate on a whim but it also diverts so much attention from the “actual” world that it’s causing all sorts of accidents.  Car, train and just plain walking accidents have been blamed on texting.

One of the most prominent changes to the P7000 is the increased zoom range.  I’m sure that Nikon did some focus groups and shit like that.  I’m also sure that 99% of those people said they wanted more zoom.  Photographically this is very convenient.  Uncle Joe never has to get out of his lawn chair to cover the family reunion.  More importantly the photographer you hire to shoot your wedding can post up in the corner and zoom in and out with their big white lens to get all the shots they need.  Except the shots that explore a different perspective or atmosphere.  That’s OK though cuz the shooter you hired doesn’t even know what perspective is.  You can see where this is leading.  Eventually life will be so convenient that we’ll be confined to motorized chairs like the Disney flick Wall E.  Big fat fucks with zoom lenses more concerned about convenience than creativity.  The P7000 will undoubtedly be a flop.  With a 28-200mm zoom lens poor image quality will be forthcoming.  Don’t worry though.  This won’t stop the big boys from  cramming even more “convenience” into the next model.

Well put Big Poppa! Nothing like getting up close and personal with your subject, then before they know it “Bam”, another classic hit! That’s why I walk on my tip toes for the creep effect.

As for convenience… I agree, this is a systematic was to make people lazy and keep them disconnected from each other, thus undermining personal relationship. We humans are lost zombies! Believing that if we get the next convenience gadget our life will be meaningful. Nothing can fill the emptiness inside like an up close and personal relationships with others. Zoom lenses, ipods, text message (from my your kids), t.v., internet (oops!), and automobiles are part of the down fall of the human existence. Ask yourself…? Are you obsessed with the next item that can make your life more comfortable? If I only had that …? I would feel better. If so, put down the snack pack, turn off the t.v., go out and meet your neighbor, take a picture of a new acquaintance, and post it here!

    Don’t be a “Zoomie Zombie”!

Go “Prime Time” and make a friend!

    C.F. 4 LIFE!
